With over a decade of experience working in reserves and sanctuaries \u2013 and a special passion for elephants \u2013 he spends much of his time tracking and observing them in the wild. Thanks to his insights, we\u2019ve come to truly appreciate the lives of these magnificent creatures.<\/p>\n<p><em>Here\u2019s what he had to share\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_row et_pb_row_2\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_column et_pb_column_4_4 et_pb_column_3  et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough et-last-child\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_heading et_pb_heading_1 et_pb_bg_layout_\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_heading_container\">\n<h2 class=\"et_pb_module_heading\">Elephant Behaviour &amp; Social Dynamics<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_2  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<p>One of the most captivating aspects of elephant life is their strong sense of family and empathy. At Mont Eco, our scout has seen them caring for each other with incredible tenderness\u2014especially when one from the herd is unwell. They\u2019ll bring food to the sick and use tactile communication, gently touching one another with their trunks, to offer comfort and maintain connection.<\/p>\n<p>Die Kommunikation innerhalb der Herde erfolgt auf subtile, aber wirkungsvolle Weise. However, during dry seasons, we support their diet with supplementary feeding - providing straw, as well as fruits and vegetables sourced from local farmers that can\u2019t be sold. This approach not only nourishes the elephants but also helps reduce food waste and strengthens ties with nearby communities. They do have clear favourites when it comes to foraging: karee trees and sweet thorn acacias are top of the list. A powerful display of this is seen when the matriarch lets out a low rumble - an unmistakable cue that prompts the rest of the herd to follow her lead without hesitation. Amongst many memorable moments, one that always stands out to our scout is witnessing the Elephants peacefully feeding alongside giraffes and kudus. These gentle giants experience deep love, care for one another, and visibly grieve when they lose a member of the herd. Their emotional world is rich and incredibly real. Within the wider ecosystem of the Klein Karoo, Elephants serve as keystone species. Wir \u00fcberwachen die Elefantenherde genau, um ihre Gesundheit sicherzustellen, und greifen nur ein, wenn es absolut notwendig ist. In schwierigen Zeiten, wie z. B. D\u00fcrreperioden, leisten wir zus\u00e4tzliche Unterst\u00fctzung und bem\u00fchen uns um die Erhaltung einer ausgewogenen, florierenden Umwelt. Indem wir die lokalen Gemeinschaften einbeziehen und nachhaltige Methoden anwenden, tragen wir dazu bei, dass diese majest\u00e4tischen Tiere weiterhin gedeihen k\u00f6nnen.<\/p>\n<p>Die Elefanten in der Karoo stehen vor mehreren Herausforderungen, darunter Ver\u00e4nderungen ihres Lebensraums, Wasserknappheit in D\u00fcrrejahren und die zunehmenden Auswirkungen der menschlichen Entwicklung au\u00dferhalb der gesch\u00fctzten Grenzen des Reservats. Ihre Herden wandern durch 37 L\u00e4nder Afrikas. Sie sind leicht an ihrem R\u00fcssel zu erkennen, der der Kommunikation und der Handhabung von Gegenst\u00e4nden dient. Und ihre gro\u00dfen Ohren erm\u00f6glichen es ihnen, \u00fcbersch\u00fcssige W\u00e4rme abzustrahlen. Die oberen Schneidez\u00e4hne entwickeln sich bei afrikanischen Elefanten zu Sto\u00dfz\u00e4hnen und wachsen im Laufe ihres Lebens. Es gibt zwei Arten von afrikanischen Elefanten - den Savannen- (oder Busch-) Elefanten und den Waldelefanten. Savannenelefanten sind gr\u00f6\u00dfer als Waldelefanten, und ihre Sto\u00dfz\u00e4hne sind nach au\u00dfen gebogen. Waldelefanten sind nicht nur kleiner, sondern auch dunkler und ihre Sto\u00dfz\u00e4hne sind gerader und zeigen nach unten. Auch bei der Gr\u00f6\u00dfe und Form des Sch\u00e4dels und des Skeletts gibt es Unterschiede zwischen den beiden Arten.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/species\/african-elephant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2013 Source<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_9  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<p>Die Zahl der afrikanischen Waldelefanten ging in einem Zeitraum von 31 Jahren um mehr als 86% zur\u00fcck, w\u00e4hrend die Population der afrikanischen Savannenelefanten in den letzten 50 Jahren um mindestens 60% abnahm, so die Bewertungen.<\/p>\n<p>Trotz des insgesamt r\u00fcckl\u00e4ufigen Trends bei beiden afrikanischen Elefantenarten verdeutlichen die Bewertungen auch die Auswirkungen erfolgreicher Schutzbem\u00fchungen. Ma\u00dfnahmen zur Bek\u00e4mpfung der Wilderei vor Ort sowie eine unterst\u00fctzende Gesetzgebung und Landnutzungsplanung, die die Koexistenz von Mensch und Wildtier f\u00f6rdern sollen, waren der Schl\u00fcssel zum erfolgreichen Schutz der Elefanten. Infolgedessen haben sich einige Waldelefanten in gut verwalteten Schutzgebieten in Gabun und der Republik Kongo stabilisiert.
